The Weather Channel and Saco, Maine TV - July 20th 1990

In July of 1990 we went on a family trip to Old Orchard Beach, Maine. We stayed at the Lord's Motel (now the Wagon Wheel Motel) right near Orchard Beach. The rooms had VCRs so I got my dad to buy me a VHS tape so I could record some American TV as a souvenir. Since I was a fanatic of Canada's The Weather Network, I was mesmerized by The Weather Channel! I had to record some of that. I also reco...

    And now it's 30 years ago today that this was recorded... oh, those were the days when the WeatherSTAR 4000 was in use. Later on in the 90s both The Weather Network and MétéoMédia would have Christmas themed local forecasts (usually when it's a non-sponsored one) during the Christmas/New Year period for both the background and the music.

    Nowadays, due to the Pelmorex cyberattack that killed the PMX-1500 in September of last year as shown here, they now use the PMX-XD pretty much everywhere including the Ottawa market. It's a real shame that the older units (PMX-1500, PMX-3200, PMX-NG, WeatherSTAR 3000 and 4000) have all gone away, but I guess we have to keep up with the times...

    Welcome back! I will say to get a thunderstorm this early in the year is unusual, although they can occur at any month in your area. Then again, this winter has been a soft one with winters getting warmer on average as well as other seasons, compared to previous winters when you recorded The Weather Network/MétéoMédia back then.

    Based on what I know, Toronto used a separate feed for viewers in the Greater Toronto area compared to the national and other feeds The Weather Network used... just like when MétéoMédia used a separate feed for viewers in Montreal versus the national feed the rest of Quebec got (mostly), parts of Ontario including Ottawa and New Brunswick, as well as the satellite feed nationwide. Looks like the Toronto feed got the PMX 1500 in 1996...

      @@mikeyBegood Without a doubt, despite what happened recently with TWN/MM when they had a cybersecurity attack last week, meaning the data went out... Even back in the good ol' days, we were prone to data going out or missing every now and then depending on where people lived, sometimes going into standby mode if there were technical issues with classical music (and then later on the 2006 local forecast music on loop). But back then, yeah presenters had more on-air time compared to now.

    Also, MétéoMédia's local forecast theme that they used here goes all the way back to December 1996 when they launched the winter programming, albeit with different music when it was first used and with WeatherSTAR 4000, compared to the music played here (as in using this local forecast theme for 3 years pretty much). I think the satellite image and radar for MétéoMédia on their local forecasts came in to use either in late 1999 or sometime in 2000, as well as extending the local forecast to 1 minute and 30 seconds (if the latter wasn't done so in 1997-98).

The first one is the Long Range Forecast intro shown/heard on the 6:03 mark & also the Travellers Forecast intro on the 14:42 mark. If anyone know what it is? Can anyone of you please help me out? My ice storm story is a bit different from others. I was home from college on break when this hit. My parents lived outside Saratoga NY, which was far enough south that temps never dropped below freezing. We had major flooding, but that was about it (the creek behind their house flooded BAD). Then I drove back up to Plattsburgh for the new semester a couple weeks later. I could not believe how many trees along I-87 had their tops snapped off. To this day, those thoughts still stick in my head about that storm.

    Fairly steep downhill spiral from here. They followed The Weather Channel's advertising template almost to the tee. Soon every segment is sponsored by a product, most of it is localized ad placements by their broadcasting hardware. Then the segments get shorter. More commercials. Thanks for archiving some of these. Watched a lot of TWN back in the day. In the 90s I only had basic cable and there was like 2-3 OTA channels.

    • @graigmellon7874
      @graigmellon7874 Рік тому

      Ever since they moved out of MM's headquarters in May 1998, it hasn't been the same for TWN, though it wasn't until 2003 (December 2002 on MM) when the local forecasts got longer, then 2006, and finally 3 minutes in 2011. Yes MM also followed TWC's advertising template as well, but at least they had more staying power because of the personalities and the music they featured, some being different than what TWN used at the time. Nowadays most communities use PMX-XD, replacing the PMX-NG, PMX-3200, and PMX-1500.

    At 5:20 I remember Timmins still had the old STAR 3000, with a short term, long term, "Across the Region" with Toronto, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Slt-Ste-Marie" listings (instead of Kapuskasing, Slt-Ste-Marie, Sudbury, North Bay, Rouyn", and then a chart with some American locations. ON this video, it reminds me of when I visited North Bay Ontario, and wondered why the screen went "blank", as the graphic dissolved from the "Forecasts" listings to "Latest Observations" and lower display went blank. Was the graphics pre-programed like this? Or was the Technical director manually dissolving between 2 different graphics?
